Discussion:
[opennms-discuss] Asset import from CSV

Question:
How can I convince the OpenNMS web interface to display asset data?

Platform:
OpenNMS 1.3.3 on CentOS 4.4

Issue:
Importing asset data from a CSV populates the database with the new
asset data but some fields are not populated in the asset description
area of the web interface.

Import/Export works correctly, i.e. I can import the new data and export
it back out cleanly. It's just the web interface which is erroneous.

Regards,
Simon.

Anyone?

I've upgraded to 1.3.5 with the no change - Asset import from CSV
doesn't update asset descriptions.

This is a showstopper for me, as their appears to be no other mechanism
for entering bulk data. Is it really the case that OpenNMS requires
asset data to be submitted manually for each and every asset?

Regards,
Simon.

It appears that you have a DB somewhere containing this information.
You have a couple of options:

1) Write an automation that triggers on the external database looking
for asset information that has changed and actions on updating the
OpenNMS asset table. There's not much documentation on this
capability, it will be available soon.

2) If you are a Java programmer, work with the OGP to improve the
Importer's capabilities to update the Asset table while importing
nodes, interfaces, and services to be monitored.

3) Look for errors in the webapp logs and give us more details about
why it's not working. It's hard to go on nothing much more than it's
broke.

Is it really the case that OpenNMS requires
asset data to be submitted manually for each and every asset?
It has to be submitted somewhere manually at some point, right? The
feature was added long ago for those that didn't have anything for
tracking this information and associating it with nodes being
monitored by OpenNMS.

Because it was added long ago, before the days of brozow and his
JUnit testing framework, we don't have Unit tests in the code for
this feature. If you were to find errors in logs and open a bug in
bugzilla, it may be something that can be quickly fixed. The more
detail you provide the better.

I've haven't messed with the import stuff yet but,
since it's in a postgres dbase, cant you write a script to read the csv
and insert it into the dbase?

Explain "not in interface".
You mean you don't see the updated info thru the gui?
Or you cant change the info that's being displayed where the snmp
"system" info is at?

Not exactly too sure what version of ONMS that is, but the assets table
is what you need anyway and that looks to be the same in 1.2 as 1.3.

There is always pgAdmin3 also.

http://www.pgadmin.org/

Or if you want a web based management tool there is phppgadmin.

I might suggest using Excel to connect to the DB. This will allow you
to see the DB table structure as well as run some nifty reports.

All you need to do in order for this to work is install the ODBC driver
for Postgres on the system with Excel and then establish a connection.

Once I started playing with this I found all sorts of cool ways to do
things.

I've haven't messed with the import stuff yet but,
since it's in a postgres dbase, cant you write a script to read the
csv

and insert it into the dbase?

Anyone?
I've upgraded to 1.3.5 with the no change - Asset import from CSV
doesn't update asset descriptions.
This is a showstopper for me, as their appears to be no other

for entering bulk data. Is it really the case that OpenNMS requires
asset data to be submitted manually for each and every asset?

Oh, you will also need to allow connections by making a configuration
change on the OpenNMS system also, sorry I forgot to mention that.

Danny

I might suggest using Excel to connect to the DB. This will allow you
to see the DB table structure as well as run some nifty reports.

All you need to do in order for this to work is install the ODBC driver
for Postgres on the system with Excel and then establish a connection.

Once I started playing with this I found all sorts of cool ways to do
things.

Man oh man, I'm glad I came across this before I sat down and created a
spreadsheet with all of my asset information.

This does really suck though because I have almost 75 nodes that I have
to enter asset information for. This is going to make my next couple of
days quite long lol.

Although I suppose I could figure out how to insert it using postgres,
but I have never seen the table structure for ONMS so it would take me
almost as long to figure that out as it is going to take to manually
insert the information for every node..

Explain "not in interface".
You mean you don't see the updated info thru the gui?
Or you cant change the info that's being displayed where the snmp
"system" info is at?

John
